Savor Fall and Reconnect as a Family

Fall is the heart and soul of all the seasons. It’s grounding, comforting, and yummy, all in one.

While there’s the typical busyness that comes with the kids being back in school—a flurry of  homework, activities, and obligations—autumn is the perfect time for families to reconnect, be present, and exhale. For tips on easing out of summer’s lackadaisical days and into the back-to-school bustle, peruse our Transition from Summer to Back-to-School with a Peaceful Fall Reset blog.

Connection is everything. And, it doesn’t cost a dime or require much time. It’s all about creating special experiences that draw the family closer while creating memories that last long past the season.

Start a “Yes” Jar

Say “yes” to the little things in life—they often have a way of becoming the most treasured moments. Have family members write down little things they'd like to do together—"take a sunset walk," "make hot chocolate," "go look at the stars," "let Mom pick the music in the car"—and place the slips of paper into a jar.

Everyone can add to it as they please. Whether you take turns once a week or happen to have a little time to spare, pull an idea from the jar and see where the moment takes you all.

No bells or whistles needed to create cherished memories.

Make Volunteering a Regular Part of Your Life

Often, people think about volunteering as the holidays draw near, but helping others isn’t reserved for Thanksgiving or Christmas. There are many ways to help others throughout the year. Volunteering not only benefits others, it can also grow our appreciation and gratitude.

Consider lending a hand as a family one weekend day a month, each time helping a different cause. Serve at a soup kitchen, remove trash from a beach, or spend time with seniors—the ideas for giving back are endless.

Think of all the joy you’ll spread while building your family bond.

Capture Family Legacies for Generations to Come

The Family Story Project is a heartfelt and truly priceless gift, preserving memories to pass down through future generations. Have the children interview family members about their lives, recording the storytelling sessions in their unique voices.

Try questions such as:

  • What was your life like growing up, and what did you want to be?
  • What was my mom or dad like as a kid—well behaved or a troublemaker?
  • What’s one thing about your life that would completely surprise me?
  • What’s the best advice you ever received?
  • Did you have a favorite family tradition?
  • What's something that always makes you laugh?
  • If you could tell your younger self anything, what would you say?

As time goes on and loved ones pass, these recordings can become cherished family keepsakes, preserving memories in the voices of the people who lived them.

Enjoy a “No Destination” Family Walk

Go nowhere on purpose. Meander. No time constraints. No phones.

Let the kids lead the way. Roam the neighborhood, tap into your inner child, and get swept up in the awe of Halloween and fall decorations. Marvel at autumn’s vibrant leaves as they crackle under your feet. Listen for crickets chirping. Breathe in the earthy scent of a wood-burning fireplace.

It’s all about being present with each other.

You aren’t walking to get somewhere. You’re simply walking together.

Slow it Down Sundays

No chores? No homework? No errands? Yes, please!

How would you feel about having no agenda for just one Sunday—or even part of one—where everyone embraces a little quiet time?

Dive into a juicy book, sit outside and enjoy nature’s sights and sounds, get lost in a puzzle, bake a new cookie recipe, or simply, take a nap—nurture your souls.

Then, gather later for the heartwarming ritual of Sunday dinner.

A Storage Unit Museum of Memories

As you comb through your storage unit, swapping out summer decor and clothes for everything fall, have everyone choose one item that means something to them to bring back home. Choose an evening where each family member can present their special piece and share why it’s meaningful to them.

From a favorite book to a photograph, a childhood craft or project, or an old Halloween costume, a storage unit isn’t just a place to store stuff; it’s a place where your family’s history lives on.

Oh, if these walls could talk . . .
