It’s here! The day you’ve all been waiting for. The day you’ve worked so hard for.

It’s move-in day at college! Joyful for kids, bittersweet for parents. Exciting and a little nerve-wracking for all.

College move-in day is a huge emotional turning point. Your baby is no longer a baby, but rather a young adult. Okay, maybe more like half child, half adult.

The car is packed and loaded, top to bottom, front to back, with your kid’s entire life of can’t-live-withouts and must haves precariously teetering in tubs tied to the car’s rooftop. The question is, how in the world will all of it fit into a postage stamp-size dorm room, let alone one shared with another student whose life will be equally packed into that same tiny area, both prepared for a minor apocalypse? 

We’ll call it cozy.

Boxes piled everywhere. Last-minute Target runs. Kleenex stuffed in your pockets as you pretend you’re fine, claiming that your eyes are red from allergies. It’s all part of the ritual. Just know that, somehow, it all works out. That’s where a plan of action, including a dorm-packing guide, comes to the rescue, becoming your sanity and saving grace as your family rides the roller coaster of emotions. Soon, the mayhem gives way to a meaningful, treasured moment.

A Few Important Things Before Packing

Now, said with love, I know you and your child both want their dorm room to feel like a home-away-from-home, creature comforts and all. Before you begin packing everything and the kitchen sink, consider the following:

• Review the dorm guidelines, rules, and regulations; many dorms have rules prohibiting small electrical appliances (fire hazards)
• Coordinate with the new roommate(s) on the possibility of sharing key items; save space and costs by avoiding duplicates
• Try your best—and this is a hard one—to rethink the “just in case” mindset; Amazon, Target, and Walmart are only a click away with anything—and everything—your kid could possibly need
• Try to view a video of the room beforehand (YouTube is a great resource) and obtain measurements

Dorm Essentials

Repeat after me . . . essentials. You know, the things absolutely necessary. Will your kid’s life fall apart without the ten hoodies and five pairs of tennis shoes? 

Here’s a likely list of what students will need:

• Bedding (often, twin XL)—sheets, comforter, mattress protector and topper, blanket/weighted blanket, and pillows
• Towels 
• Toiletries
• Shower caddy and shoes  
• Laundry supplies, including detergent, stain remover, and basket
• Cleaning supplies 
• School and desk supplies and organizers 
• Laptop
• Chargers, power strip/surge protector, extension cords

As for favorite stuffed animals, keepsakes, and décor, encourage your student to choose thoughtfully. Home will still be waiting with familiar comforts whenever they return—laundry-stuffed pillowcases and all.

It’s the Little Things that Count

You’ve covered the big stuff. Now for the smaller, yet equally important things that everyone tends to forget—the things that feel monumental late at night:

• Medicine kit 
• Flashlight 
• Various sizes of batteries
• Fan 
• Umbrella 
• Tool kit 

Small Space/Big Strategy Organization Lifesavers

Dorm rooms somehow manage to hold two adults, two wardrobes, two semesters of snacks, and approximately zero square feet of extra space. Here are a few organizational tips to maximize space . . . and peace.

• Storage bins, including stackables and under-bed containers
• Bed risers (incredibly helpful!)
• Command hooks
• Over-the-door hooks
• Closet organizers, including multi-garment vertical hangers (also great for hats, purses, and belts) and cubbies

A little dorm room organization and roommate etiquette go a long way when multiple people are sharing the square footage of a walk-in closet. 

What to Do With Everything That Doesn’t Fit

Even after careful planning, many families realize not everything needs to make the trip to campus.

Your dreams of an exercise or craft room, reading nook, or meditation space may finally be in reach. Rather than parting with sentimental or favorite items, store them safely until needed or desired.

Move-In Day Logistical Tips

You’ve planned, prepared, and packed. Now for the fun part—moving in! To keep things flowing as easy as possible, here are a few key suggestions:

• Arrive early to find parking
• Bring water/snacks 
• Wear comfortable clothes 
• Bring rolling carts 
• Label bins 
• Take photos before unpacking 
• Have an abundance of patience

• And, if you’re anything like me, keep a keg (college lingo!) of coffee at arm’s length to fuel the entire move-in crew

Helping the Emotional Transition

From receiving the college acceptance letter to choosing the school to moving to campus, emotions can feel like rogue waves.

This exciting time of new beginnings and independence can stir up a lot of feelings, including homesickness, uncertainty, loneliness, and even, imposter syndrome. New routines can throw off even the most confident of us. What’s important is that you stay connected with your kid and show support as they navigate this new path. 

Just remember, big milestones often come with big emotions for both parent and child.
